Benefits of steam bathing

Steam bathing has been prevalent since thousands of years and its benefits are recognized even by our ancestors. Steam bathing enables purification and detoxification of the skin and body. It increases blood circulation and stimulates the immune system thereby leading to complete physical and mental well-being.

How is steam bath useful?

Heat acts as a therapeutic agent and has been used for healing in many cultures. The chemical reactions in our body are directly affected by heat. This has an effect on our tissues and our health.

Our body uses this mechanism of heat, which we term as Fever, as a healing process.

During a fever, the functioning of the immune system is stimulated. This leads to the reduction in growth of bacteria and viruses. This also causes increase in – production and release of white blood cells in the blood stream; the generation of anti-bodies; and the production of interferon, an anti-viral protein that fights cancer.

Steam baths are often called “Artificial Fevers” as they elicit similar healing responses in the body. The various benefits of Steam bath are as follows

  • Stress baths relieve stress to a great extent. They prove to be helpful for muscle aches or arthritis as the heat relaxes muscles and relieves pain and inflammation.
  • The heat of steam baths helps in dilating air passageways of the lung and facilitates breathing. This is very helpful for asthma and allergy sufferers.
  • The heat helps in alleviating congestion and speeds recovery time in case of common cold.
  • Steam baths increase blood flow to the skin thereby causing the skin to sweat. A good sweat removes dirt and grime from pores, giving the skin a healthy glow.
